Open economy

From Citadel Wiki
Early accessCitadel is still in development. Numbers and rules on this page can change between patches. Last checked October 2026.

Citadel's open economy begins with play. Players recover resources, manufacture equipment, move cargo, and lose ships, creating supply, demand, and replacement needs across the world. The open economy is intended to let players exchange the results of that activity without relying only on a publisher-controlled marketplace. The wider market is still being introduced during early access.

What moves through it

Recovered resources feed manufacturing, research, salvage, and player trade. Destroyed ships create demand. What one crew brings home can become another player’s module, ship, target, or opportunity.

Settlement

Citadel uses crypto to give its open economy a cryptographically secure, independently verifiable settlement layer. Player transactions do not have to exist only inside a publisher-controlled database, which helps keep the market open and its records transparent. Crypto supports the economy; the game remains about flying, building, trading, and fighting.

Not play-to-earn

Citadel is not built around play-to-earn. It does not promise income, returns, or rising item values. Items exist first as useful and destructible parts of the game economy. Players may participate in an open market, but financial reward is not the objective or a guarantee.
